Here’s why you should give Hddb (Hard disk Database) a try: it will help you quickly locate whatever file you’re looking for. The application works like this. First up, it builds a database of all your drives. Then it allows you to search within the database. It takes a snapshot of the file system and uses it to help you quickly locate files.

Hddb is available as a portable version and as an installer. There’s an installer for 32-bit Windows editions and one for 64-bit Windows editions. Run the installer and a setup wizard will show up and guide you through the installation process.

I want to bring up the fact that the setup wizard allows you to pick what components will be installed on your Windows-powered PC: shortcuts in the Start menu, on the desktop, and in the Startup folder; shell context menu (Search Here option shows up in the context menu when you right click a folder); Hddb build service to help build a database with no UAC prompt; add Hddb folder to system PATH so that you can more easily use Hddb in the command line.

Hddb has a ribbon interface. As expected, with a simple mouse click you can hide the ribbon out of sight. If you don’t like the ribbon, you can go to the Options menu and disable it; the ribbon will be replaced with a traditional File Menu. From the same Options menu you can further customize the interface by picking one of several supported languages for the interface.

The first time you run Hddb, it will ask to build a database. Said database is a snapshot of the file system taken at the time you perform the build action. You can search the database to find photos, music, videos, documents, any file you want to file. Please note that Hddb does not automatically scan file changes. This means that you will have to rebuild the database so it includes file changes. You can rebuild a database of all your drives or just specific drives.

Useful info on how to find files is included in Hddb’s Help file.
Additional useful info on how to use Hddb is available on the application’s Get Started webpage.

Hddb is free software.

Quickly and efficiently locate files by searching the database built by Hddb (that’s short for Hard Disk Database).

Pros

Hddb is available as a portable version and as an installer for 32 and 64-bit Windows editions. The setup wizard allows you to pick what components will be installed. You can pick between a ribbon interface and a traditional File Menu interface. Several languages are available for the interface. Hddb is free software.

Cons

Hddb does not automatically scan file changes and you will have to rebuild the database.
